    Well I’m not sure when the Viceroy Butterfly (Limenitis archippus) was “discovered”, but it was described (ie. given a proper scientific name) by Pieter Cramer in either 1775 and 1776. There seems to be a discrepancy as to exactly which year it was, depending on the source. But this was only just after Linnaeus had devised the system of binomial nomenclature which we use to name organisms to this day, so I don’t know how long naturalists had been aware of the Viceroy or recognised it was unique from other butterflies.
